When and How to Safely View the Great American Eclipse

You’ve probably already heard, but in case you haven’t, there’s a total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21 and is visible only in the U.S. This occurrence is very rare and won’t happen again until 2045. This is a once in a life time event, as the eclipse spans across the entire nation. Consequently, this is expected to be the most viewed solar eclipse ever!

Here in Florida we won’t see a total eclipse. It will be viewable in our area but we will only be able to see a partial eclipse. Locally it will start at 1:18 pm with maximum coverage at 2:50pm, and finally ending at 4:14pm. Schools here in Manatee County have decided against letting children view the event while in school, and have even moved all outdoor activities inside during the event. They are allowing parents to dismiss their children so they can view it together.

Although this is a once in a lifetime event, there are dangers associated with viewing the eclipse. Viewing the eclipse with the naked eye can cause permanent damage, even blindness. The safest way to view the eclipse is to wear solar eclipse glasses. They are sold at retail stores, online, and are being handed out at some libraries. Wearing number 14 welder’s glass goggles are also another option, but they are expensive.

Here’s a fun DIY project you can do together.

Great American Eclipse

2009 Sky & Telescope DIY Project

There have been recalls on eclipse glasses. So if you already bought some, please check to be sure they haven’t been recalled. There are only 12 companies who make these glasses. Glasses must have ISO reference number 12312-2 on them.

These items are NOT to be used in place of the eclipse or welder’s glasses.

  • Sunglasses
  • Unfiltered Telescopes
  • Magnifiers
  • Binoculars
  • Cameras

This is exciting, and as mentioned, a once in a lifetime event. Please be sure your children understand the dangers associated with looking directly at the sun during the eclipse. We want you to enjoy it, not get hurt from it.
