Establishing Back-To-School Routines
Now that the lazy days of summer are over, it is time to get back in the school routine. The earlier these routines and rules are set, the easier it will be for everyone to get onboard. Here are some tips to start the school year off on a good note.
- Set up a bed- time. Make this bed time something that you stick to. Yes it will be hard for kids to get used to going to bed earlier, but they will wake up more refreshed and ready for the day.
- Establish set homework times. When children come home from school it’s good to have a bit of down time, time to talk about the day and relax. If they know that at 4pm they need to start their homework, they will use their time effectively.
- Get ready the night before for a stress free morning. If you lay out clothes, get the back pack ready, and pack lunches the night before, mornings will be more enjoyable.
- Opt for showers and baths for night time before bed.
- Limit electronic device and television time. When they’re not being distracted by these devices, children will devote more time to things they should be doing.
- Make sure children are aware of what they should be doing after school or where they should go. Not all children go home to a house with a parent waiting for them. Let them know what time you expect them to be home. If your child goes to an after school program, explain that process to them so there are no surprises.
Sticking to these routines and rules will provide children with the security they need. As parents, it’s our job to provide limits for our children. By establishing and following these limits early, they will be better decision makers when they’re old enough to make them.
