Halloween Safety

Halloween

Fall is in the air and it’s almost Halloween! The kids will be dressed up and thinking of goblins, ghosts and ghouls. Before they set out on Halloween night, consider some safety measures to ensure a fun, safe evening.

Costume Selection
It’s so much fun to see our children dressed up as their favorite character, or the popular choice of the year. When selecting a costume, think about night time visibility. It’s very difficult to see children in darker costumes at night. Think of tripping dangers too. Avoid long, flowing costumes and make sure they fit properly. Also, masks can hinder their vision. Try using make up instead. Costumes should also be flame resistant.

Trick-or-Treating
Children under 12 should not trick-or-treat alone. Encourage older children to go out in groups. Review safety practices with them such as looking both ways when crossing streets and walking not running. Also warn them of the dangers of strangers. Advise your children not to enter homes or cars of strangers. Consider giving them a flashlight or a glow stick to make them more visible to motorists.

Candy
The Teal Pumpkin Project provides an alternative for children with food allergies. This is a welcomed addition to the fun of Halloween for so many. Even though it started only two years ago, it has become very popular. Advise them not to eat while they’re out. Before they eat any candy, carefully inspect it for choking hazards and tampering. Don’t allow your child to eat homemade items.

We hope all of you have a safe and spooky Halloween!
