Is Your Kids First Cellphone Under The Tree?

5531939787_7a0e22cee3_oCellphones have become very common with kids. There will probably be thousands of kids getting them this year for Christmas. Having one makes it very convenient for parents to communication with their kids throughout the day and keep track of where they are and how they are doing.

Giving your child a cellphone should not be taken lightly. You and your child should establish a clear understanding on the responsibilities and consequences of having the phone. One mother took it very serious and developed a 18 point cellphone contract with her 13 year-old son. Here is a summary of some of the points in that contract.

  • You own the phone
  • Always know the password
  • Phone gets turned off at a certain time every night
  • If its lost or damage, child is responsible for the replacement
  • Be respectful in your conversations
  • Don’t be rude. Put the phone away when with others.
  • If your child messes up with one of the rules, have a set period of time to forfeit their phone
  • Continuous failure to comply will result in termination of your cellphone privileges

In addition to having an agreement with your child, you can select phones and plans that restrict or control access to the internet. For the complete contact see To My 13-Year-Old, An iPhone Contract From Your Mom, With Love.
