Are your kids playing Pokémon Go?

It seems like everyone is excited with the newest app addiction, Pokémon Go. It has been out for a week now, and it is still making headlines. Remember how crazy everyone went over Angry Birds? Well it seems that Pokémon Go has topped it.

This generation of kids has not explored, and wandered around outside as much as that of their parents. This generation has mostly been playing games, using social media, texting and watching movies rather than getting outside and playing like their parents used to. But now with Pokémon Go, they are encouraged to get up and search their local parks, stores, and neighborhood. How you might ask? This app is available as a free download to smart phones. The game uses GPS to direct players to locations of characters to catch. They get further along in the game by catching more, and visiting gyms and training and Poké Stops.

In today’s society, something that is getting kids up and being active, while communicating with others, exploring, and problem solving is a great thing! Here are some tips to help ensure safe Poké Hunting.

  1. Never go out and search alone. Use the buddy system and watch out for each otherchild playing game.
  2. While out playing, be aware of your surroundings. Don’t keep your eyes glued to your phone.
  3. Use common sense. Don’t walk into a street, or go out in the water while trying to catch a character.
  4. Don’t ride a bike, skateboard, or drive a car while playing.
  5. Stay away from private property.
  6. Disable any personal data that is not necessary for game play when downloading.
  7. Limit playtime each day.

Parents can also play this game. Who knows, you and your child might go hunting together!

Have fun and be safe!
