Prepping Children for the Hurricane
Hurricane Irma is on the way. We are not sure right now of the impact it will have on us here but that doesn’t mean your children aren’t worrying about it. They must see some of the news broadcasts, and if you’re trying to get water, gas or other things, they see how crazy it is out there with everyone trying to prep for the storm.
There are some things you can do to try and lessen the fears they must have.
- Talk to them about it. The more they know, the better they will feel.
- Let them know it is a natural occurrence, and that no one has made this happen.
- Be honest. They will feel better if they know you’re telling the truth and not hiding anything from them.
- Identify their fears and maybe you can calm them. Listen to them, and be reassuring. Let them know you understand their fears, and that you will do everything you can to keep them safe.
- Give them the details of your evacuation plan. If you do need to evacuate, it’s better for them to know what’s going on.
- Make sure they know what to do in the event you become separated. No one wants to become separated, but if they have a plan in place.
- Play games and try to keep the environment calm and fun.
- If you do need to go to a shelter, pack a few of their favorite things to make them feel a bit more comfortable.
Your children are relying on you to help them through this situation. We are all stressed during this time, especially them. Hopefully these tips can help you get through this with your child. Please, we want you all to be safe, if you are told to evacuate, please do so. Know your zones, and know where your shelters are. Some shelters open Friday at 4pm.
