Why Tummy Time Is Important

Tummy time is one of the first exercises your baby learns, and probably one of the most important ones.

Tummy Time Is Important

Tummy time is time spent (while awake) on their tummy. They sleep on their back, to help prevent the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). But when they’re awake, they need to spend time on their stomachs to help to develop muscles needed for them to lift their head, and eventually, the strength needed to sit, roll over, stand, and walk. It also prevents the flattening of the back of the head. Doing this early sets the stage for motor skills as they grow up.

When Should I Begin Tummy Time for my Baby

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), tummy time can start as soon as the baby comes home from the hospital. This should only be when they’re awake, for 3-5 minutes two to three times per day.

Prepare an area on the floor with a clean blanket to place the baby on. A good time to try this could be after a nap, or after a diaper change when they’re happy. Gradually increase the time as they get older.

How Can I Help My Baby Enjoy Tummy Time

Babies might not enjoy being on their stomachs. Try getting on the floor with them, get right in their face and talk or sing to them. Also, try putting a mirror in front of them for them to look at themselves. Put some brightly colored toys around them as they get older to spike their interest as they get older. This will increase their desire to move around as they try to reach for them.

It’s important to never leave the baby unattended during tummy time. You and your baby should both also be awake during this time.
